The Chamber of Minerals and Energy of WA has appointed Edgar Basto as its acting president following the departure of Woodside executive and CME president Jeroen Buren.

Mr Basto is the current asset president, WA iron ore at BHP Billiton.

He has held a number of roles at BHP, and has worked in mining industry roles across Columbia, Peru and Chile.

Mr Buren left his position at Woodside two weeks ago, rendering him ineligible to sit on the executive council.

A new president will be instated at the CME executive council meeting in December.

CME chief executive Paul Everingham welcomed Mr Basto to the role, and thanked Mr Buren for his contribution to the sector as president since his appointment in early 2017.

“Edgar has had an extensive career in the global resources industry, holding key managerial and operational roles locally and internationally,” Mr Everingham said.

“Jeroen brought great knowledge and expertise to the role, having worked in the oil and gas industry for more than 25 years.

“On behalf of CME and all our members, I thank Jeroen sincerely for his leadership, guidance and contribution to the Western Australian resources sector over the past 18 months.”
