Builder named for $600m Karrinyup expansion

Building will start next year on a $600 million redevelopment of Karrinyup Shopping Centre, with construction giant Brookfield Multiplex adding the big ticket job to its portfolio of works.
AMP Capital today announced it had appointed Brookfield Multiplex at Karrinyup, which will almost double in size to 113,000 square metres, making it Perth's largest mall, according to BNiQ.
In addition to the retail expansion, which will comprise a food and beverage precinct, new large-format retailers and speciality stores, the project will include 150 apartments.
Brookfield Multiplex will work with architects Hames Sharley and Taylor Robinson over the coming months to finalise the design of the centre.
"We are excited to deliver the next phase of Karrinyup, which will reposition it to provide customers with an unprecedented retail and entertainment experience," AMP Capital Shopping Centres state development manager, Scott Nugent, said.
The works are part of a $1.35 billion pipeline for AMP Capital in Perth, with a $750 million redevelopment of Garden City Booragoon also in the works, however a builder has not yet been appointed for that job.
Business News reported earlier this year that AMP Capital, which manages the centre on behalf of owner UniSuper, had selected Brookfield Multiplex to a shortlist of two builders, the other understood to have been Lendlease.
Brookfield Multiplex chief executive John Flecker said the builder had experience at Karrinyup, having carried out the centre's last expansion in 1996.
"It’s exciting to have the opportunity to again bring Karrinyup Shopping Centre into a new age with AMP Capital," Mr Flecker said.
“Brookfield Multiplex has a strong history of delivering landmark retail developments in Western Australia and Karrinyup Shopping Centre will be no exception."
The Karrinyup expansion is the second big retail project won by Brookfield Multiplex in 2016, following its appointment to carry out a $350 million redevelopment of Mandurah Forum in April.
