A number of Western Australian finalists featured in the 2008 Australian Gourmet Traveller Awards, with East Perth's new fine dining destination Restaurant Amuse, Must Wine Bar sommelier Emma Sputore and the glamorous 1907 bar among those in line for top prizes.

But only one WA representative topped the pool - Balthazar Restaurant, which won the Wine List of the Year Award.

According to Australian Gourmet Traveller, the Perth CBD establishment's wine list stood out because, unlike almost every other list in the country where Australian wines are arranged by grape variety, Balthazar's wines are arranged by region.

This means semillon sauvignon blends and chardonnays are listed together under the heading 'Margaret River whites', which according to Gourmet Traveller is a bold move by Balthazar restaurant manager and wine list compiler, Daniel Morris.

Mr Morris said the regional approach was inspired by the European classification.

Sandalford Winery has been growing its high-end offering lately, with the exclusive 'dego' nights called the 'Long Table Degustation' the latest initiative.

The seven-course dinner will hosted by chief winemaker Paul Boulden and executive chef Phil Thomas, with the inaugural event will be held on September 24.

The menu includes rabbit and chorizo terrine with mustard bread, cornichon and tamarind chutney, and a shiraz and black pepper braised beef cheek with crayfish ravioli and truffled spinach sauté.

The menu is matched with new-release Margaret River wines and some vintage wines. All Sandalford wines are sourced from the Margaret River vineyard.

For those who enjoy the Sandalford concerts, Gusto hears that the winery, which has had successful concert series in the Swan Valley, is looking to replicate the concept in the Margaret River facilities.
