BGC Contracting has won a contract to manage a $58 million upgrade to a section of highway in NSW, including construction of a 300-metre long bridge.

BGC has expanded its presence on the east coast with the awarding of the contract, which includes replacing the existing Burrill Lake Bridge on Princes Highway, south of Sydney, and removal of an existing crossing with a southern foreshore park.

Member for South Coast Shelley Hancock said a number of businesses tendered for the project, which also includes roundabouts at both ends of the new bridge to improve road connectivity and a pedestrian and cycle path across the bridge which will link to the Ulladulla cycleway.

“The new bridge will have a higher elevation to reduce the impact of flooding on the road and the new intersections will meet modern safety standards,” Ms Hancock said.

The project is expected to cost $58 million.

BGC expects to employ about 50 people from the region for the project, with work to begin later this month.

Chief executive Greg Heylen said the contract win was part of BGC’s “renewed strategic focus on public infrastructure projects and other opportunities in resources on the east coast”.

“The turn in the commodity cycle has required us to refine our growth strategy by diversifying revenue streams through a broader geographic and commodities mix,” he said.

“BGC’s scope of work includes temporary road diversions, demolition, utility relocation, management of environmental issues, construction of the road formation, piling and bridge substructure, remediation and landscaping.

“When completed, the 16-span pre-cast girder bridge will raise this section of the Princes Highway above one in the 100-year flood levels.”
