A joint venture between mining services companies Ausdrill and Barminco has been named the preferred contractor for work at AngloGold Ashanti’s Geita gold mine in Tanzania, with the deal worth about $US70 million ($A99.5 million).

The joint venture, named African Underground Mining Services, was appointed by AngloGold as preferred contractor for the underground mine establishment and operation of the Star and Comet pit at the Geita mine.

The contract value is estimated at about $US70 million over two and a half years, with mobilisation scheduled for the end of this month.

“The principal terms and conditions of the appointment are subject to full detailed documentation,” Ausdrill said in a brief statement.

The Geita project is AngloGold’s largest single gold mining operation.

The deposit is currently only mined as a multiple open pit operation.

Ausdrill shares were 4 per cent lower to 23.5 cents each at 11:30am.
