The state government has announced a $30 million upgrade of Margaret River Senior High School to boost its capacity to 1,200 students.

Education Minister Peter Collier said architects would be appointed early next year to begin planning, with the new facilities expected to be completed for the 2020 school year.

The expansion includes a double-storey building with 16 classrooms, a science building with five laboratories and preparation areas, and a sports hall with a fitness centre and change rooms.

The state government has also flagged more facilities to be added in a second stage development, including administration and student services areas, which will increase capacity further to 1,450 students.

The school currently has about 950 students from years seven to 12.

“Margaret River SHS has become increasingly popular, and transportable classrooms have been required to cater for this surge in demand,” Mr Collier said.
