Swiftel Ltd was a listed Australian company founded in 2000 by Chris Gale. It was granted a Telecommunications licence, and took control of Roebuck Resources, a listed speculative mining investment company, by reverse takeover. Swiftel built one of Australia’s first Metropolitan Fibre optic Networks in (MFN) Perth, Australia. Swiftel was listed in the 2003 Australian Deloitte Fast 50 list of growing companies ranking as the 5th fastest growing technology company.
In 2004 People Telecom merged with Swiftel Ltd, against a background of financial difficulties for Mr Gale's private interests which were linked to Swiftel's operations. At the time of the merger with People Telecom, Swiftel had a growing data telecom business and by merging with People Telecom they had a combined group providing a full suite of telephony and data services for business users totaling over 30,000 business consumers across Australia
People Telecom was acquired by M2 Telecommunications in December 2008 and is now placed in the ASX 200.
