Article Timeline

Market City plays a critical role in the marketing and distribution of fresh produce in the State. Over $638M (AUD) worth of fresh produce is traded annually through the Central Trading Area (CTA) of the markets. In addition, significant sales are carried out by tenants to the major supermarkets and through interstate and international trade.

The Market City site currently comprises in excess of 111,000m² net lettable area within the Central Trading Area, warehouse and commercial centre buildings. The Central Trading Area is the main selling area for fruit and vegetables consigned by growers to merchants who sell to supermarkets and stores throughout the state. Produce is also consigned to the other markets around Australia depending upon demand and price. Warehouses are occupied by Central Trading Area tenants for coolroom storage, ripening rooms and storage of hard produce lines. Warehouses are also tenanted by secondary wholesalers who process orders for country stores and smaller metropolitan outlets. Value adding business (processors), meat and fish auction businesses also occupy tenancies at Market City.
