Harvey Beef is the livestock processing business founded by Ernest George Green in Harvey in 1919, 10 years after he arrived in the town and established a butcher’s shop. In 1945 his eldest son, Malcolm, took over the business and formed the company known as E.G. Green and Sons Pty Ltd with the younger son, Colin in charge of distribution and transport activities. It later gained an export licence. The company branched out further into land and property, horse breeding and pastoral activities, modernised its plant and grew a leater export business. A new generation of the Green family took over in the 1980s. In 2005, the various companies connected with E.G. Green & Sons Pty Ltd entered a Deed of Company Arrangement, aimed at reducing costs in an effort to save the company. Singapore-based Harmony Investment Fund took control of the Harvey beef business in 2006 in a joint venture and then moved to full ownership in 2009 after buying out partners Elders and Stark Investments. Asian-based international managed investment fund Pacific Alliance Group took control of Harvey Beef in 2012 when it bought several abattoir interests from Singapore-based Harmony Investment Fund. In May 2014, Andrew and Nicola Forrest’s private company Minderoo Group announced it had taken over the business.
