MONDAY night’s graduation ceremony at the University of Western Australia was a salubrious affair, with some prominent Perth names on both the conferring and receiving side of things. UWA Chancellor Michael Chaney, former Wesfarmers CEO and UWA graduate himself, was on hand for the proceedings. Among the family faithful in attendance, Lord Mayor Dr Peter Nattrass (pictured) was a notable face in the crowd, celebrating his daughter Lavinia’s graduation with a Bachelor of Economics degree. Our WA Business News source was perusing the evening’s programme during the ceremony (out of journalistic curiosity, you understand) and made an interesting observation on the Doctor of Philosophy page. He found himself wondering if James Fogarty, whose viticulture-flavoured thesis was entitled “Wine investment, pricing and substitutes”, might in fact be related to Peter Fogarty of the Fogarty Wine Group, whose holdings include Jarrahdale operation Millbrook Winery, Margaret River’s Deep Woods Estate and NSW boutique Lake’s Folly in the Hunter Valley region. Alas, it was but mere coincidence.
