Forrest steps up pressure on Gillard
Fortescue Metals CEO Andrew Forrest has stepped up pressure on Prime Minister Julia Gillard on the resource super profit tax by releasing details of a compromise reached with her predecessor. Mr Forrest said Ms Gillard must ensure her government achieves a substantially improved position on aspects of the RSPT compared to Mr Rudd.
Smith wins in cabinet reshuffle
Foreign minister Stephen Smith has added trade to his portfolio in a cabinet reshuffle announced by new Prime Minister Julia Gillard. Simon Crean will take over Ms Gillard's portfolios of education, employment and workplace relations. Ms Gillard said Mr Rudd, who missed out on a cabinet position, would be welcome to take up a senior cabinet position if Labor was re-elected.
South West needs $750 in investment
A new report has found the South West region needs more than $750 million in transport infrastructure improvements to allow it to cope with future industry and population growth (see page 35).
Gillard is new PM as Rudd steps aside
Julia Gillard was elected unopposed as leader of the Labor Party and became Australia's first female prime minister, after Kevin Rudd decided not to stand in a leadership ballot last Thursday. Treasurer Wayne Swan was elected Labor's new deputy leader. He also was not opposed.
