Southern Cross Electrical Engineering has been awarded a $40 million electrical and instrumentation contract at Rio Tinto's Cape Lambert Port B project in the Pilbara and says it is in negotiations with the mining giant to secure further works at the project.
SCEE will start work this month on the Phase 1 package for the car dumpers and screenhouse at the port.
The package marks the third contract SCEE has secured at the port project, having secured a $100 million electrical instrumentation contract in October 2012 and a $15 million powerline supply contract in November 2011.
The company said today it was in "continuing discussions" with Rio regarding the Phase 2 package, which is anticipated to be of a similar value to Phase 1.
"Rio Tinto is a very important client for SCEE and we are pleased to be awarded the next stage of works at their Cape Lambert Port B project, which is an endorsement of our succesful delivery of earlier work on this project in 2012 and 2013," SCEE managing director Simon High said.
SCEE recently moved into its new corporate headquarters in Naval Base and has flagged that it will seek to secure more oil and gas contracts in the coming years.
Premier Colin Barnett officially opened Rio's Cape Lambert Port B facility in October last year, which will boost the annual iron ore export capacity at the port from 80 million tonnes to 140 million tonnes per annum.
That capacity is set reach 210 million tonnes per annum upon planned future expansions.
