ESTABLISHED in 1987, Gumnut Montessori Pre-Primary is a small independent Montessori school based in Claremont for three to six year olds, and has a maximum of 28 students and two full-time teachers. Gumnut is currently establishing a new board comprising of four parents and three non-parent directors. The seven-member board will meet at least six times a year and will be primarily involved with forming a strategic plan for Gumnut and setting up policies and procedures for the effective running of the school. Individuals with some understanding of Montessori philosophy and experience in areas such as strategic planning, education, decision making, policy development, finance and law are encouraged to apply to be a director of the voluntary board. All new board members will undergo an induction procedure so that they become familiar with Gumnut and its operation. The Montessori method was devised by Italian, Dr Maria Montessori, in 1907 and encourages children to learn the skills of concentration and orderly work habits as well as developing the qualities of independence, self-confidence and self-discipline rather than the mastery of subject areas For further information or to express your interest in becoming a director of Gumnut, please contact the coordinator on 9388 6110 or at coordinator@gumnutmontessori.wa.edu.au
