LandCorp and Stockland have together received a national award for the South Beach Estate, the only Western Australian winner at the Urban Development Institute of Australia Awards.
The announcement is below:
LandCorp and Stockland received one of the highest honours in the property development industry, winning a coveted national award for their iconic South Beach Estate at the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) Awards for Excellence held in Brisbane.
LandCorp's Chief Executive Ross Holt said the UDIA, the peak body representing the development industry, recognises leading property developments in Australia. He said the award is testament to LandCorp and Stockland's achievement in overcoming numerous challenges to transform a former industrial site into a high quality coastal development.
"South Beach Estate has already won a UDIA State Award, so to be recognised on a national level and receive a UDIA National Award for Excellence clearly demonstrates that the estate is the 'best of the best' in its category," Mr Holt said.
"The estate was competing against other state awards winners from around Australia and the competition was of a very high standard. In total nine awards were presented on the night and South Beach was the only Western Australian winner."
LandCorp's 4.3ha development at South Beach delivers a mix of single and group housing sites and directly adjoins Stockland's 16ha residential estate.
LandCorp and Stockland jointly entered South Beach estate in the 'Residential Developments over 150 Lots' category. The judges said the developers worked together to create a seamless development where attention to detail in urban design was a real feature.
"It is great to see that the complexity of the project, the numerous challenges that were overcome and the solid working relationship with Stockland have now been recognised at both state and national levels," Mr Holt said.
"We also worked closely with the Cities of Fremantle and Cockburn and the local community over several years to transform the former derelict industrial site into a place where residents now enjoy a high-end beachside lifestyle close to the buzz of Fremantle.
"One of the drawcards for South Beach Estate is the top quality landscaping, which features a central lake with decking, parks, artworks, bike paths and gardens, and shaded picnic areas for the whole community to enjoy.
"For the community, perhaps the greatest legacy is having access to a beachside area that was previously out of reach because of the contamination associated with its former industrial use."
"This accolade furthers a long award-winning streak for Stockland," said Alf Lay, State Development Manager of Stockland Western Australia.
"The high profile South Beach project is a leading example of urban renewal and both Stockland and LandCorp are committed to delivering benchmark examples of high quality design and sustainable development.
"This prestigious award comes on the back of South Beach winning the coveted title of best Medium Density Housing at the 2008 UDIA Awards for Excellence," concluded Mr Lay.
