Developers can now build up to seven storeys along Fremantle Harbour, and up to five storeys along Queen Victoria Street, under new planning guidelines endorsed by the state government today.
Planning Minister John Day said the redevelopment of Fremantle's east end was a step closer after the approval of an amendment to the City of Fremantle's local planning scheme, which would allow for increased building heights in certain areas.
The precinct has been assigned an R-AC residential density coding, which allows for residential developments of a varied density within state government-nominated activity centres.
"Under the planning guidelines, development within the precinct could accommodate up to 2,500 residents, which would have a major flow-on effect for the community, allowing for a stronger economy and more diverse population," Mr Day said.
Mr Day said the increase in building heights would facilitate the extensive redevelopment of the east end of Fremantle.
He said a key objective of the amendment was to ensure high standards of redevelopment in terms of sustainable design and providing community benefits.
Development incentives will be built into planning guidelines to achieve those goals, Mr Day said.
