Coogee Chemicals is proposing to expand its facility with a $60 million fuel storage development next to its Kwinana Beach site.
The West Australian chemicals manufacturer is seeking to build the storage tanks on the corner of Rockingham Beach and Patterson roads, next to its existing tank terminal facility.
Coogee Chemicals has lodged an application with the state government’s Metro Outer Joint Development Assessment Panel to build four 30-megalitre fuel storage tanks.
The application said the construction and commission of the four tanks would receive, store and distribute bulk liquid fuels to meet customer and industry demands.
The City of Kwinana has backed the proposal, recommending the JDAP members approve the 120 megalitre hydrocarbon storage and handling tank terminal application at its meeting next week.
The city’s responsible authority report said the development incorporated economic principles to ensure maximum leverage was being gained from investments in new infrastructure.
“The proposed additional fuel storage significantly increases the amount of fuel that can be stored on site, allowing for greater economic growth within the region,” it said.
“The applicant has advised that the purpose of the proposed development is to improve the fuel storage capacity of the site.
“The applicant has also advised that the additional 120 megalitres of fuel storage will not create any changes to staff numbers, customer numbers, or hours of operation.”
The JDAP will consider the proposal on Friday.
