RECENTLY released figures from Alcoa have shown the company’s Australian staff volunteered a record 107,700 hours in the community last year.
According to Alcoa, this is equivalent to 12.2 years or 4,487 days and is an increase from 94,407 hours in 2009.
It also boasted 25 per cent of a 6,000-strong workforce that generated a total of $US429,750 in community funding, up from $US308,000 the previous year, money that was directed into multiple causes such as environmental and conservation initiatives, emergency services, health care organisations and schools.
“Volunteering and community engagement are critical aspects of how we do business, and integral to how we encourage our people to live Alcoa’s values outside of the workplace,” Alcoa managing director Alan Cransberg said.
“These results are fantastic and the contribution our people make to their local communities is real and impactful.
“We run these successful volunteering programs – ACTION and Bravo! – where we match volunteer time with grants to community organisations because employee volunteering is a critical part of our corporate social responsibility. We also offer our people time off work for volunteering activities.
“A great number of the activities our people are involved in are things which protect and preserve our environment – very fitting with our new Green Works initiative established by the Alcoa Foundation.”
