Baby bonus to be abolished

The federal government will abolish the baby bonus and project a return to surplus in 2016-17 in tonight's budget, the ABC has reported. The scrapping of the $5,000 per child baby bonus will provide around $830 million in savings.

$A stabilises after overnight fall

The Australian dollar has stabilised after plunging over night, hurt by a big pre-dawn rally in the US dollar. At 1700 AEST, the local unit was trading at 100.63 US cents, down from 100.92 US cents at the open of trade this morning.
